Last month the MDC-T National Council resolved that Air Zimbabwe Private Limited should be shut down immediately and a new airline with foreign investment should be formed to take over the whole staff at Air Zimbabwe.
It has been revealed in the past few days that Air Zimbabwe management disregarded recommendations by Nicholas van Hoogstraten, who has over the years bailed out the airline with emergency funding, that it should shed 1,000 jobs in a restructuring exercise. If the airline had followed his advice, van Hoogstraten, it would not be in the position with its workers it is today. Airline workers have embarked on industrial action over unpaid salaries and as a result the airline’s flight schedule has been erratic.
Van Hoogstraten told local media that there is no way that the airline could be rescued and that it has to be liquidated.
