Air New Zealand has issued a global proposal for SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) innovators and start-ups to become a supply partner to the flag carrier, the first time an airline has made a global call to potential suppliers.
The airline notes its new Opportunity Statement – which provides an overview of the carrier’s SAF requirements – is ‘intended to kickstart discussion for ongoing collaboration as well as identify new opportunities’.
Describing the initiative as a “novel approach,” Air New Zealand chief sustainability officer Kiri Hannifin explained: “This Opportunity Statement shares our vision and allows current and future SAF producers to recognise both the opportunity and Air New Zealand’s ambition to become a customer as soon as possible”.
The airline is looking to enter short, medium and long-term SAF offtake agreements, estimating that it will need SAF to make up around 20% of its total fuel uptake by 2030 if it is to meet its decarbonisation targets.
