Air India has sold a 737-200 aircraft that it had reportedly forgotten was under its ownership, according to local media reports.

In a note to employees on Friday (November 21), Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the sale of the more than four-decade-old aircraft, registered VT-EHH, had been completed.

He said the sale was unusual, with the company only recently discovering that the aircraft was part of its fleet.

The aircraft was delivered to Indian Airlines in 1982 and was leased to Alliance Air in 1998. The aircraft was absorbed into Air India in 2007 — the same year it merged with Indian Airlines.

The converted freighter aircraft was operated on behalf of India Post before it was decommissioned in 2012.

The aircraft had sat for years at a remote parking bay in Kolkata airport. The airport's authorities had requested Air India to remove the aircraft, which first brought its existence to attention.

The Tata Group took over Air India in 2022.
