Air India fined for breaching DGCA passenger protections

Air India has been fined $12,000 by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s civil regulatory body, for failure to comply with certain consumer protection guidelines.

Following inspections at Bangalore, Delhi and Kochi airports in May and September 2023, Air India was deemed to have failed to have provided hotel accommodation for passengers affected by delays. Business class passengers were also left uncompensated after being compelled to travel on unserviceable seats, and certain ground personnel were deemed to have received insufficient training.

“During the inspections of the airlines, it was observed that Air India was not complying with the provisions of the relevant CAR (Civil Aviation Requirements),” noted a statement by the DGCA, which said the fine was implemented after a cause notice was issued to the airline on 3 November.
