Air India completes retrofit of legacy A320neo fleet

Air India has completed a major retrofit of its legacy A320neo fleet, with the 27 aircraft now back in service with brand-new cabin interiors and liveries.

Commenced in September 2024 as part of a $400 million fleet modernisation programme, the retrofit was completed within a “record” timeframe, the airline said.

The retrofit equipped all aircraft with modern cabin interiors in a three-class cabin configuration.

In total, the programme installed more than 4,000 new seats, including 3,564 economy, 648 premium economy, and 216 business class seats.

The retrofit also laid more than 450 metres of premium leather, 15,000 metres of fabric, and 5,000 sqm of carpet. More than 8,000kg of paint was used to create the aircraft’s new liveries.

In addition to 14 newly delivered A320neo aircraft and 63 that were acquired following its merger with Vistara last year, Air India now operates 104 A320 family aircraft featuring new or upgraded cabin interiors.

In 2026 and 2027, Air India will continue to retrofit other narrowbody and widebody aircraft in its fleet.

Starting in 2026, Air India will retrofit 13 legacy A321 aircraft. Starting in early 2027, it will retrofit 13 legacy 777-300ER aircraft, aiming for completion by October 2028.

The timeline of the 777-300ER retrofit has shifted due to supply chain delays, the airline noted.
