Air India has commenced its over $400 million refit programme for 67 legacy aircraft in its fleet. The retrofit programme will begin with its 27 narrowbody A320neo aircraft.
The first narrowbody aircraft to commence the programme is expected to re-enter commercial service in December this year. Following this, around three to four aircraft per month will undergo the retrofit with the full 27 narrowbody retrofit programme to be complete by mid-2025.
"The commencement of interior refit of the narrowbody fleet is an important step in our journey of enhancing the flying experience of our customers. Over time, all the legacy widebody aircraft will also be refitted," said Air India CEO and managing director Campbell Wilson.
Air India said it is in the final preparations for the full interior upgrade of 40 legacy widebody 787 and 777 aircraft. The first widebody retrofit is anticipated to begin early next year.
It was also reported by the Indian Express on September 10, 2024, that Air India's low cost subsidiary Air India Express will phase out its business class seats available on a select number of its 737 MAX aircraft. Citing a senior airline official, the outlet said the business class product "really does not fit well" with its low cost model.
