AFI KLM to invest €7bn in newer, quieter engine models to reduce noise pollution

Air France-KLM is set to invest up to €7bn over the coming years, with newer, quieter engine models, reducing noise pollution by up to 50% compared to previous aircraft generations.

To meet government targets at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, KLM recently unveiled its plans to the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure set to slash noise pollution by up to 20% during the day and 15% at night.

KLM’s proposal revolves around investment in newer aircraft, research and development within flight operations, and adjusted flight schedules.

KLM currently operates a mix of 43 Boeing 737 narrowbody fleet for its short-to-medium haul flights, 11 Airbus A330s, 31 Boeing 777s, and 22 787 Dreamliners with a six 787-10 on order.

The airline retired its noisy Boeing 747-400 jumbo in favor of its smaller A330, 777, and 787 widebody aircraft in 2020. KLM has also conducted extensive research to adopt new measures like rerouting approach plans to limit the time spent at lower altitudes over Amsterdam and adjusting flight schedules to ensure only quiet aircraft are taking off or landing at the airport during nighttime hours.

With several planning and proposals underway, KLM is set to meet its target of a 15% noise reduction during nighttime hours in 2024, with daytime following in 2026.

“Our aim is to reduce impact on the areas surrounding airports. Aiming solely for fewer flights and a strict 2024 deadline, is not the only way. There are other ways to solve this problem. Our approach ensures that noise impact will continue to decline,” the airline said in a statement.
