AerCap reveals ransomware cyberattack, retains full control of IT systems

Irish aviation leasing company AerCap has been affected by a ‘cybersecurity incident related to ransomware,’ the company has confirmed in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Alongside notifying law enforcement, AerCap ‘promptly took steps to investigate with the support of third-party cybersecurity experts,’ the filing notes. The company has full control of all IT systems and has suffered no financial loss related to the attack.

AerCap’s investigation into the incident, including the extent ‘to which data may have been exfiltrated or otherwise impacted, remains ongoing,’ concludes the lessor.

Cyber security specialists Hackmanac – which manages ‘the world’s largest repository of successful cyber attacks from open sources’ – states on its website that the hack occurred on January 18. The perpetrator, named as ‘Slug’, is listed as having extracted 1TB of data with a random deadline set for January 29, 2024.
