Abu Dhabi’s Midfield Terminal set to open towards end of 2023

The Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Terminal is expected to open for commercial operations towards the end of 2023, as per the information by Momberger Airport. The construction work of the airport started in 2012 and was supposed to be completed in 5 years, but it was delayed due to certain challenges.

The completed terminal building will have the capacity to accommodate up to 11,000 passengers per hour and 45 million passengers annually. The terminal is valued at $2.94 billion covering an area of 700,000 square meters. The terminal was initially planned to support the growth of Etihad Airways.

As per sources, Abu Dhabi Airports partnered with Etihad Aviation Group, EAG in 2020 to train 17,000 employees to operate the new Midfield Airport Terminal at the Abu Dhabi Airport.

Once the new terminal is opened, terminals one and two at the Abu Dhabi airport will be shut down permanently while T3 will be mothballed while depending on traffic development, T3 could again be used at peak times as a remote boarding lounge. It could also be developed into a standalone terminal including landside, for example, for budget carriers, the report added.

There is also a road tunnel connecting Midfield to the present terminal leading to easy commute of passengers.
