51% of British citizens are planning to travel abroad twice in 2024 and 56% are planning to go overseas in summer, according to research conducted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s financial security arm, ATOL. This may come as somewhat of a surprise with the cost of living crisis increasing pressure on UK citizens.

However, 'revenge travel' seems to have lingered post-pandemic with UK citizens still trying to make up for the holidays and trips robbed by Covid restrictions.

The research was conducted in anticipation for ‘Sunshine Saturday’ on January 6, the most popular date for planning a holiday in the UK.

“We’ve seen bookings grow significantly back to pre-pandemic levels, and that’s why it’s important to make smart decisions to avoid missing out on key financial protection,” said UK Civil Aviation Authority director Tim Johnson.

It also found that 20% of passengers are likely to be more cautious in their planning by spending a month of research into flights, destinations, and accommodation before finalising their booking. Previously, 11% would spend over two weeks planning and 18% would plan a holiday in around a week.
