4AIR backs contrail research project with Canada’s Western University

4AIR has expanded its support for contrail research through a new partnership with Western University, funding a project that uses artificial intelligence and a global camera network to track contrail formation.

The initiative supports the Global Meteor Network (GMN) Contrail Observation Project, which uses more than 1,000 cameras worldwide to identify contrails and match them to active flights in near real time. The system is designed to improve understanding of when and where contrails form, offering more precise data than traditional satellite monitoring.

4AIR, which provides sustainability programmes including carbon offsetting, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and contrail mitigation, said the research is funded through its Aviation Climate Fund. The company added that improved forecasting and monitoring could help the industry develop more effective strategies to reduce the climate impact of contrails.
